Ratings rose for the April 6th edition of Saturday Night Live on NBC with Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington as host and Sara Bareilles as musical guest. According to Deadline, the show averaged a rating of 4.4 in the Live+Same Day household category for the metered markets and a rating of 1.7 for adults 18-49 within the local people meters. This was a huge jump from the previous week’s low ratings of 4.1 and 1.5, which happened to tie for the lowest ratings of the season. With Harington’s hosting came one of the biggest ratings for SNL in a while. The show ranked number one in the non-sports category for the night on the Big 4 networks, both in the metered-market household category as well as in the local people meters. Not only was it number one for Saturday night, but also it was nearly top in all Big 4 networks for the week, topping all but three primetime entertainment programs.
The 17th episode of the season also featured Jason Sudeikis as an all too warm Joe Biden as well as a surprise appearance by several others of the GOT cast. In Harington’s monologue at the beginning of the show, several questions were thrown at him regarding how the show will end, including questions from fellow cast members who, Harington joked, should already know the ending.
First was Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen on GOT), who claimed “I have no idea what’s actually happening,” because her scenes were mainly comprised of her talking to a dragon, which was actually a tennis ball on a green pole during filming.
John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) also made an appearance, asking Harington if he knew what the fate of his character would be, since his only line in the show was screaming, to which Kit asked what came before the screaming and Bradley replied, “dragon opens mouth.” Bradley also asked Harington “Do you think we’ll still hang out?”
Next, SNL‘s own Pete Davidson portrayed a sensitive Night King, asking Kit if they can still be friends, to which Harington replied, “we were never friends.”
Last but not least, Harington’s own wife and GOT co-star Rose Leslie made a cameo. Expecting her to also want to know the ending, Harington explained he can’t even tell his wife, to which Leslie replied “I don’t care about that — I’m not a nerd.” However, she did ask Harington what they will do for money, as well as requesting that he grow his beard back.
Other Game of Thrones themed skits included a digital short full of prequels, crossovers and spinoffs, such as a mashup of Game of Thrones and Law & Order: SVU. In the short, Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay, the real actors of Law & Order: SVU, made cameos, with a sharp pun at the name of the show’s producer, Dick Wolf, as “Dire Wolf.” Other witty name changes included a Daria parody that was aptly named ‘Arya,’ after Maisie Williams’ character, as well as a show entitled “The Marvelous Mrs. Melisandre.”
The next SNL episode, hosted by Emma Stone and musical guest BTS, will air April 13 on NBC.
