According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sky Italia’s biggest series Gomorrah, which showcases woman of power in the Neapolitan mafia, debuted Friday night, surpassing ratings even for the Game of Thrones in Italy. In season 4, the leading character Genny Savastano (Salvatore Esposito) has new ambitions for his family and for the city of Naples, even though, considering his dark past, only time will tell if he will be able to pull off “the ultimate job.” In the meantime, Patrizia Santoro (Christiana Dell’Anna) gains power among the city’s gangs. She has to assert her power among the city’s opposing factions who do not expect to see a woman in command. In fact, according to The Hollywood Reporter, even though she started as an errand runner “she is now the most powerful woman in the clan, but what she gives up to maintain her power may be even too much for her to take.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Sky series is based on Roberto Saviano’s book of the same name and is produced by Cattleya and Fandango in collaboration with Beta Film. Season four directors include Francesca Comencini, Claudio Cupellini, Marco D’Amore, Enrico Rosati, and Ciro Visco. The Weinstein Co. had previously owned U.S. rights to the series. Recent seasons of Gomorrah have not yet reached the United States due to the company’s legal delays.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Beta Film, which sells the series globally, should soon reach an agreement that would find a new home for it. Gomorrah has sold in more than 190 countries and has a niche fan base around the world. The 12 new episodes debuted on March 29 on Sky Atlantic in Italy, while the dates in other territories will be announced soon.
