Sony Picture Television’s first live-action Marvel series, Silk, has found its showrunner. According to Deadline, Tom Spezialy (executive producer, Watchmen) will serve as the showrunner on Silk as a part of his overall deal with Amazon, which will be the streaming home for Silk upon its release.
Spezialy will join forces with Lauren Moon (writer, Atypical) who has written the Silk TV adaptation based on the comic run of the same name. According to Deadline, Silk, also known as Cindy Moon, is a Korean-American superhero who exists within the Spider-Man universe.
No stranger to comic book to television adaptations, Spezialy has most recently worked on HBO’s Watchmen series as an executive producer. His involvement in the series garnered the show an Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series, via Deadline.
In addition to Spezialy and Moon, the producers on Silk include Phil Lord (producer, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse) and Chris Miller (producer, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse), both of whom oversee the Sony TV series based on their owned Marvel properties. According to Deadline, Amy Pascal (producer, Spider-Man: Far From Home) will also serve as a producer on the series.
The character of Silk originated in 2014 in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 as a faceless cameo. According to Deadline, Silk is portrayed by Tiffany Espensen (R.L. Stine’s Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She first appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming back in 2017. It is not currently known whether Espensen will reprise her role in the Amazon series or if the character will be recast.
Production on the Silk TV series is set to begin in August 2021.
