It’s the end of the road for Showtime’s Roadies.
Deadline reported today that the dramedy from Showtime will not be returning for a second season. The 10-episode first season of Roadies just ended on August 28, but during its first season failed to garner enough of a fan-base to warrant more seasons.
Roadies was a dramedy following the crazy lives of the dedicated people who make sure the show goes on. Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino and Imogen Poots starred in the series which hailed from creative geniuses Cameron Crowe, J.J. Abrams and Winnie Holzman.
When Roadies finished on August 28, the finale only drew in a little over 500,00 viewers.
Crowe released a statement on his blog in response to the cancellation:
“Thanks to Showtime and J.J. Abrams for the opportunity to make the one and only season of Roadies. My mind is still spinning from the giddy highs of working with this epic cast and crew. Though we could tell a thousand more stories, this run ends with a complete ten-hour tale of music and love. Like a song that slips under your skin, or a lyric that keeps speaking to you, we hope the spell of Roadies lingers. It was life-changing experience for all of us.
“So much appreciation goes out to the sensational actors and crew who lived and breathed these stories and characters with their whole hearts. We became a family, our own music-loving troupe. Thanks also to the musicians who lived so comfortably in the world of acting. And thanks to all at Bad Robot, and Winnie Holzman, great collaborators all. Big thanks to our fans for watching and cheering us on. We’ll see you soon with a new project… and many of the same actors, I’m sure. Here’s a little glimpse of the last night of filming. This is what every day felt like.”
This particular genre of TV has struggled to find an audience. Cablers keep producing series about the music industry, but nobody seems to be watching. Earlier this year, Vinyl on HBO was canceled after initially getting renewal for season two after only one episode. And then just last week FX canceled Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll after its second season.
