One of Fox’s newest shows just lost one of its main creative forces. Charles Murray, who was set to act as co-showrunner for the upcoming music drama Star, has left the series. The Hollywood Reporter had the story.
Murray (Sons of Anarchy) was to act as co-showrunner alongside Lee Daniels (The Butler, Empire) and Tom Donaghy (The Mentalist). Daniels and Donaghy also co-wrote the pilot episode for Star, which follows the lives of three women – played by Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady – as they try to make a living as singers and musicians.
In regards to why Murray is leaving the show, sources say that he had a “different vision” for Star than Daniels and Donaghy. However, all parties are still on amicable terms. Furthermore, a replacement for Murray will likely be announced soon.
Murray is not the only showrunner this year to depart his series before it premieres. NBC’s Powerless, an upcoming comedy based on the DC Comics universe, lost its showrunner Ben Queen (Cars 2). Similarly, Fox’s new animated/live-action comedy Son of Zorn lost showrunner Eli Jorne, whose departure was also attributed to “creative differences”.
Star, which will act as a sort of companion piece to Daniels’ other music drama Empire, is scheduled to premiere when the latter show goes on its holiday hiatus.
