‘Shōgun’, ‘Baby Reindeer’ and ‘Ripley’ Lead in TCA Awards Nominations

FX’s Shōgun tied with Netflix originals Baby Reindeer and Ripley for the most nominations at this year’s TCA Awards, with five each, as reported by TVLine. The Television Critics Association Awards will be held in Pasadena, California on July 12.

The TCA announced their nominations earlier today for their 40th year. The nominees for Program of the Year, the top prize of the awards show, celebrating excellence in television are Baby Reindeer, The Bear, Hacks, Reservation Dogs, Ripley and Shōgun. TVLine notes that FX and Netflix are tied for the network with the most nominations, racking up 16 total nominations each. HBO/Max follows their lead with 13 nominations, three of which came from Hacks, for which Jean Smart (Mare of Easttown, Watchmen) was nominated for Individual Achievement in Comedy. As TVLine reported, Smart’s fellow nominees include Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary, Miracle Workers) for her role as creator, producer, co-writer and star of Abbott Elementary, Ayo Edebiri (Inside Out 2, Bottoms) for her work as chef Sydney Adamu in FX’s The Bear, Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton, One Life to Live) for Girls5eva, Devery Jacobs (Echo, Rutherford Falls) for her performance as Elora Danan Postoak in Reservation Dogs and Jeremy Allen White (The Iron Claw, Shameless) for his leading role in The Bear.

Other individual performers being celebrated for their work in television include the nominees for Individual Achievement in Drama. The nominees include Jodie Foster (Nyad, The Silence of the Lambs) for True Detective: Night Country, Richard Gadd (Against the Law, Clique) for his role as creator and leading man in Baby Reindeer, Hiroyuki Sanada (John Wick: Chapter 4, Bullet Train) for his performance as Yoshii Toranaga in Shōgun, which he also produces, Anna Sawai (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Pachinko) for Shōgun, Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers, Fleabag) for portraying the titular anti-hero in Netflix’s Ripley and Juno Temple (Ted Lasso, Little Birds) for Fargo.

As reported by TVLine, several series received their first TCA nominations this week including two Disney+ series, Percy Jackson and X-Men ’97 and Prime’s Fallout. The winners of all twelve categories will be revealed on July 12 at the Langham Huntington, a hotel in Pasadena, California, alongside the recipients of special awards, including the Career Achievement and Heritage Awards. This year’s ceremony is the TCA’s first in-person event since the start of the pandemic.
