Seth Rogen to Produce A.I. Based Comedy ‘Singularity’ for FX

FX has promoted Seth Rogen from Dirty Randy to TV series producer for new single-camera comedy show Singularity.

According to Deadline, the network has ordered a pilot for the artificial intelligence based comedy from Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who have worked together multiple times to create comedy gold like Superbad, Pineapple Express, and This is the End. The duo are collaborating with Silicon Valley producer Sonny Lee, who conceived the idea for the series, and who will also take on writing duties for the series pilot. Lee stated that the comedic tone and style for Singularity resembles that of Rogen and Goldberg’s This is the End, which is why he reached out to the duo to collaborate on the project.

The series will be set in a future where artificial intelligence has surpassed that of humanity and has resulted in tremendous changes to daily life and society. The show’s title, Singularity, is a direct reference to the premise of the series. The technology singularity hypothesis is the concept that with the development and advancement of A.I there will come a time when an artificial super intelligence will trigger a rapid technological growth that that will in turn create profound changes in civilization. Though the concept may seem a bit to sci-fi heavy or ridiculous to some, the idea is one that has been very popular as technology has seen major advancements, and has been explored in many forms before, most recently with the critically acclaimed 2015 film Ex Machina and most notably with the 1982 classic tech-noir film Blade Runner. Take a concept that has seen major success for generations, add two of the kings of comedy to the mix, and you have the potential to create one of the greatest modern comedies that will balance the fears of modern society with a healthy amount of debauchery.

This new venture from Rogen and Goldberg comes after the pair has seen a good amount of success within the TV industry. The two have recently worked together on the hit AMC series Preacher, which has recently been renewed for second season, and are currently working on a pilot for Future Man for Hulu. Goldberg and Rogen have also just released their adult animated comedy film Sausage Party, which is sure to be a buffet of inappropriate, sexual, violent, and hilarious moments.
