Selena Gomez Discusses Season 2 of ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’

The first season of Thirteen Reasons Why may have just been released on Netflix in late March, but that hasn’t stopped fans from creating theories about the highly anticipated upcoming season. Ever since the controversial series was renewed for second season earlier this month, many have speculated how the series will go on now that Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), the first season’s protagonist, has committed suicide.

Executive Producer Selena Gomez spoke with Seattle’s Movin’ 92.5 to promote her latest single “Bad Liar,” but also spent time discussing the upcoming season. According to Elle.com, Gomez has been sitting in on the writers room sessions as the Season 2 storylines are being created. While she can’t reveal much about the upcoming season, she shared that she’s “so excited for season 2.”

Before discussing Season 2 of the popular series, she reflected on how surprised she was by the reception of Season 1. “I didn’t expect the first to be as loud, if you will? I didn’t expect it to have the reaction that it did,” she said. “It was amazing, and it was complicated, and there was a lot of stuff that came with it, and I understood what that meant.”

As for the second season, Gomez was careful not to reveal too much. She said, “I think for season 2, we elaborate more on some of those questions and the stories and the resolution if you will of what some of these kids have gone through so—and are going through. So it’s exciting.”

Following the announcement that the series was renewed for a second season, showrunner Brian Yorkey spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his plans for the show moving forward. Yorkey confirmed that Hannah will still be appear on the show, even though the tapes explaining the reasons behind her suicide have all been listened to.”I think one of the things that is still hanging out there is this question of is someone responsible for Hannah’s death? Is the school responsible? Who is responsible, if anyone is?,” he said. “One way we’ll explore that question is through the trial and also through all of these kids reflecting on where they are a few months down the road and what other secrets are being uncovered. That’s going to take us into the past, into Hannah’s story.”

He also revealed that Season 2 will dig deeper into Jessica’s (Alisha Boe) rape storyline. He said, “I want to do Jessica’s story the deserved justice of following her as she goes back to school, as she tries to begin to recover from what happened to her, because it’s something that millions of young women go through.” He also revealed that Bryce (Justin Prentice), Jessica and Hannah’s rapist, will not get away with what he did. He said, “[I want to] see somebody punch Bryce in the face.”

Season 2 of Thirteen Reasons Why is expected to be released on Netflix in 2018. Check out Selena Gomez’s radio interview with Seattle’s Movin’ 92.5 below.
