SDCC ’26: Good News Everyone! ‘Futurama’ Returns With A New Season And Three Special Episodes

Good news everyone, the fourteenth season of Futurama will debut next week. Along with this new season, we will also be given three special episodes as well.

For those who don’t know, Futurama is a series that tells a story about a 20th century pizza delivery guy named Phillip J. Fry, who falls into a cryogenic freezer and wakes up 1,000 years in the future. Fry would end up getting a new job as a delivery man for an interplanetary delivery company, which happens to be owned by his distant relative, Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth. Accompanying Fry on his adventures are Turanga Leela, Bender the robot, Dr. Zoidberg, Hermes Conrad, and Amy Wong.

The series was created in 1999 and quickly gathered a large fanbase. The series went through two cancellations. The first cancellation was in 2003 by Fox due to a lack of network confidence. However, the series was renewed and picked up by Comedy Central only to be cancelled again by Comedy Central. The series had wrapped everything up after seven seasons with a deliberate series finale. Later on in 2023, the series was revived by Hulu and would later extend production for additional seasons spanning through 2026.

During a panel at San Diego Comic Con, showrunners David X. Cohen (Futurama, Disenchantment) and Matt Groening (The Simpsons, Futurama), were asked a question regarding any multi-episode specials. Cohen had confirmed that they will be making three extra-long specials with the first one being a Xmas spectacular in 2027.

The cast consists of Billy West (Big City Greens, Tooned Out), John DiMaggio (Teen Titans Go!, Batman: Caped Crusader), Katey Sagal (Stumble, One Piece), Tress MacNeille (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, Minnie’s Bow-Toons), Phil LaMarr (King of the Hill, Minions & Monsters), Lauren Tom (Rick and Morty, Iron Man and His Awesome Friends), David Herman (Bob’s Burgers, High on Life 2), Frank Welker (Invincible, Jellystone), Tom Kenny (Spongebob Squarepants, Rock, Paper, Scissors), Eric André (Little Brother, Balls Up), Abbi Jacobson (Mating Season, Tangles), and Nat Faxon (Sofia the First: Royal Magic, Watson).

Futurama is created by Groening and developed by Groening and Cohen. Executive producers including Groening, Cohen, Ken Keeler (After Forever, Bram and Alice) and Claudia Katz (Clash-A-Rama!, Tarantula). The series hails from 20th Television Animation, a part of Disney Television Studios.

The fourteenth season will debut on August 3, 2026. In the meantime, you can watch the previous seasons of the series on Hulu while you wait for the main event.
