‘Saved by the Bell’ Coming Back for Second Season at Peacock

Saved by the Bell, the reimagining of the cherished NBC sitcom, has been renewed for a second, ten-episode season by Peacock TV, according to Deadline. Tracey Wigfield (30 Rock), writer and executive producer for the series, said she has been excited by the response to the new series.

“I’m thrilled that Saved by the Bell has been renewed. I’ve been blown away by all the love for the show and can’t wait to go back and make more episodes,” Wigfield, via The Hollywood Reporter. “Hopefully we stay on Peacock for many more seasons, and then in 30 years, somebody does a reboot of our reboot and invents the threeboot.”

In the reboot, Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Franklin & Bash), now governor of California, closes many underfunded schools and, consequently, decides to send the displaced students to the richest schools, creating culture shock at Morris’s alma mater, Bayside, according to Variety.

The stars of the show are really the current students at Bayside, Mac (Mitchell Hoog, Harriet), Daisy (Haskiri Velazquez, The Forty-Year-Old Version), Lexi (Josie Totah, Champions), Aisha (Alycia Pascual-Pena, Chase), Jamie (Belmont Cameli, The Husband), and Devante (Dexter Darden, The Maze Runner). Mario Lopez (Pacific Blue) and Elizabeth Berkley (Showgirls) also reprise their roles, with Slater now the football coach and Jessie the guidance counselor, but Principal Belding has been replaced with Principal Ronald Toddman, played by John Michael Higgins (Pitch Perfect).

Lisa Katz, head of scripted content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said the new series modernizes the old.

Saved by the Bell brought a fresh and modern take to the beloved original series that resonated with viewers of all ages,” Katz said, via The Hollywood Reporter. “Season one tackled topical, relevant issues with wit, heart, humor and just the right amount of nostalgia. And we look forward to bringing fans back to Bayside next season.”
