Sarah Michelle Gellar Finally Confirms Whether or Not She Will Be Involved in the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot

It was announced last year that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in the works. Fans of the popular TV show went into a frenzy wondering if Sarah Michelle Gellar would return to reprise her role as Buffy Summers. Recently, Gellar admitted that she knew as much as the fans. She showed no hints of any involvement in the reboot and had no idea what would be happening with it.

“I don’t know anything about it, honestly,” Gellar told TheWrap. “I think that it’s a great story and I’m glad that it will get retold and hope that people will watch it. But, you know, I’ve told my story with it.”

The reboot will be helmed by new showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas). Monica made her intentions clear that there is only one Buffy, but she wants to recreate the Buffy world with a fearless fighter, once again.

“Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated,” Monica said in a tweet. “I wouldn’t try to. But here we are, 20 years later… and the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer… And that’s all I can say.”

Whedon, who created the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will serve as an executive producer on the series. The show will have a black female lead which is a certain way of changing things up by allowing representation of color – something that is much needed. One of the reasons for the original Buffy’s success was because she was a woman whose greatest qualities included strength, resilience, and loyalty. To bring back that same type of character in today’s political climate speaks volumes for what the reboot is trying to do.

There has been no announcement on what network the reboot could soon call home.
