SAG Awards Recap: Michael Keaton’s Heartfelt Speech, Historic ‘Squid Games’ Wins Make Waves At Ceremony

The 28th annual Screen Actor Guild Awards took place at the Santa Monica Barker Hanger on Sunday. Many notable moments occurred throughout the night, including Squid Games becoming the first non-English series to win the awards for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, won by Lee Jung-jae (Deliver Us From Evil) and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, won by Jung Ho-yeon (100%: Beat).

Another notable moment was Michael Keaton’s (Batman) emotional speech accepting the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for Dopesick, which was slightly delayed due to what Keaton says was a bathroom break.

Another important part of the night was Brian Cox’s acceptance speech after Succession won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, where he expresses his support for Russian actors who are being censored in the midst of the Russia and Ukraine conflict.

There were quite a few surprise winners. Jung-jae and Ho-yeon beat out some of Hollywood’s biggest names and shows. Jung-jae won his award over Brian Cox (Churchill), Kieran Culkin (Scott Pillgrim vs. The World), and Jeremy Strong (The Big Short) of Succession as well as The Morning Show’s Billy Crudup (Almost Famous). Ho-yeon won hers over Jennifer Aniston (Just Go With It) and Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde) of The Morning Show as well as Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) for The Handmaid’s Tale and Sarah Snook (Predestination) for Succession.

Another surprise was Jean Smart (Mare Of Easttown) winning the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her work in Hacks. She had been nominated three other times, once in 2007 for 24 for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series as well as two more during this year’s ceremony, one for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for Mare of Easttown and one for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, also for Hacks.

One of the biggest winners of the night was Ted Lasso, who won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Jason Sudeikis (We’re The Millers) won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the show.
