Ryan Murphy Speaks On His Upcoming Netflix Projects

During the Time 100 Summit on Tuesday, the multi-faceted Ryan Murphy revealed that he has about ten different projects in the works with Netflix, including three documentaries, four TV shows, and three movies in all. An estimated $250-$300 million overall deal for the next five years.

The uber talented director and writer, had already previously announced five titles slated for an upcoming release on the streaming giant such as:  Ratched, a drama series starring Sarah Paulson in The One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest prequel; The Politician, a political satire featuring Ben Platt; and Hollywood, which will take place during the golden age of Tinseltown.

Along with two aforementioned adaptations of Broadway productions including: The Prom, which is set for a September 2020 release, and The Boys in the Band, which will star the Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons and AHS alum, Zachary Quinto. No other details on each upcoming project have been released by Netflix, itself.

Appearing on stage with Janet Mock — writer and producer on FX’s Pose— Murphy also mentioned his work on the co-created series about 1980s ball culture in New York City and further mentioned that his Netflix deal was the  “hardest thing he has ever done” and “the easiest” as well.

I was able to say what I felt my worth was, and it was met. And I was astonished. It was a great moment for me. I didn’t feel like the picked-on kid anymore. If you’re not writing about women or gender or race, you’re not writing.

He also added that “there aren’t any obstacles anymore” when it comes the progressiveness of Hollywood and his ultimate goal is to champion those that need to be heard. Mock seconded that Murphy’s influence along with Greg Berlanti and Shonda Rhimes, is a good start to television’s ongoing endeavor in including more diverse voices and talent in the industry.
