Roy Wood Jr. of ‘The Daily Show’ to Star in New National Guard Comedy Series for Fox

Comedian Roy Wood Jr. (The Daily Show) is set to write and star in a new single camera, currently untitled comedy series for Fox, according to Deadline. Denis Leary (Rescue Me, The Thomas Crown Affair) and Jack Leary will executive produce the series, alongside Wood, through their own Amoeba production banner.

The concept for the series is based around the “oft-forgotten National Guard,” according to Deadline. The characters in the show will “use their time on domestic deployments to come up with new ways to pat themselves on the back, even though they don’t deserve it.”

Wood has been a standup since the late 1990s and now hosts Comedy Central’s This Is Not Happening and serves as a correspondent for The Daily Show. Previously, Wood starred in TBS sitcom Sullivan & Son and has appeared in various shows including AMC’s Better Call Saul and Netflix’s Space Force.

Denis Leary and Wood worked on a series of animated shorts called Dogs Playing Poker for Fox to air during its NFL coverage. This new project for Leary and Wood came about because of a development deal Leary signed with Fox Entertainment in July, according to Deadline.
