Rooster Teeth is bringing in a new group of writers to author the second season of their animated sci-fi series Gen:Lock, one that “collectively increases the show’s behind the scenes representation,” according to Variety. Gen:Lock‘s star and executive producer Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Just Mercy) has linked the newly announced writer’s team to his #ChangeHollywood initiative, via Variety. #ChangeHollywood is collaborative effort between Jordan’s production company Outlier Society and the civil rights nonprofit Color of Change to “lay out tangible ways to invest in anti-racist content,” per Color of Change press release.
The new writer’s room will be led by Daniel Dominguez. He’s served as a writer on shows like Disney’s Crash & Bernstein, Camp WWE and the retro-flavored Netflix animated series Seis Manos. Much like Gen:Lock, Seis Manos is partially inspired by Japanese anime. In an interview with Collider, Dominguez talked about how the style played a large role in his formative years: “I grew up on anime, I grew up on adult cartoons that I fell in love with, I was just surprised by the level of philosophical complexity you could do in the storytelling.”
Dominguez is collaborating with several other writers on Gen:Lock Season 2. Maasai Mohandas Singleton, son of the late John Singleton, worked as a writer’s assistant and, according to an Instagram post, he penned at least one new Gen:Lock episode himself.
Another Season 2 writer, journalist Evan Narcisse (Rise of the Black Panther, Spider-Man: Miles Morales) worked on the first season of Gen:Lock as well. Kristle Peluso, meanwhile, announced over Twitter that, in addition to her work with Gen:Lock‘s Season 2 development team, she wrote for two upcoming Crunchyroll Originals, Onyx Equinox and High Guardian Spice. Writer Gavin Hignight has made name for himself in the field of children’s programming, writing on shows such as Transformers: Cyberverse, Star Wars Resistance and Avengers Assemble.
Gen:Lock creator Gray G. Haddock (Camp Camp, RWBY) will reportedly not return for Season 2. In 2019, according to Animation Magazine, Rooster Teeth CEO Matt Hullum announced that, in light of employee abuse allegations compiled by PopDust, Haddock would step down as head of the company’s animation studio. Months later, Haddock made an official claim on Twitter that his creative work would solely be as an independent contractor, although he did not ultimately rule out any future collaborations with Rooster Teeth.
At 2 P.M. EST on September 21st, the newly minted Gen:Lock Season 2 writer’s room will be featured on a special free panel at Rooster Teeth’s virtual RTX at Home event, as reported by Variety.
