Ricky Gervais Returns As Host For ‘Golden Globes’

Ricky Gervais will be hosting the 77th annual Golden Globes Awards, Entertainment Tonight has learned, which marks The Office star’s return to one of television’s and cinema’s most prestigious ceremonies after three years. Ricky Gervais’ last Golden Globes hosting gig was in 2016, where the crass comedian turned the awards show into a bit of a roasting session, putting several of Hollywood’s most prized celebrities in the hot seat with little regard for their personal comfort. Matt Damon, Jennifer Lawrence and Mel Gibson were some of the comedian’s unfortunate victims, and at times even the Golden Globes Awards themselves took a hit from Gervais’ sharp tongue, proving that no one is safe when he hits the stage. He also hosted the 67th Golden Globes in 2010, the 68th Golden Globes in 2011, the 69th Golden Globes in 2012 and the 73rd Golden Globes in 2016.

Viewers got a taste of what Gervais will bring to the table with a special video that aired during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. “Hi, I’m Ricky Gervais, and I’m hosting the Golden Globes.” Gervais says on the video before popping a champagne bottle. The video then experiences interference due to the comedian’s antics, with a woman narrating, “As usual, we have no idea what he’s going to do.”

The Golden Globes also took to twitter to announce and celebrate Ricky Gervais’ return with a tweet. “He takes the fifth! Ricky Gervais will resume annual hosting duties for a record fifth time at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards,” the tweet says.

Since Ricky Gervais’ time away from hosting, the Golden Globes has flirted with several other comedians to assume the role of host. Jimmy Fallon hosted the 74th Golden Globe Awards in 2016, Seth Meyers hosted the 75th Golden Globe Awards in 2017, and Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg hosted the 76th Golden Globe Awards. This will be Ricky Gervais’ historic fifth time hosting the Golden Globes, the only host in the awards show’s decades long history to do so. The 77th Golden Globes will air on January 5th, 2020.
