Adult Swim’s flagship adult animated series Rick and Morty has won its second-ever Emmy Award, Deadline has confirmed. The show won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, after previously winning the same award for the first time in 2018.
Rick and Morty follows the surreal sci-fi adventures of cynical genius-inventor Rick Sanchez and his nerdy grandson Morty. The series premiered on December 2nd, 2013, and has run for 41 episodes over 4 seasons so far. Rick and Morty has become one of the all-time greatest hits for Adult Swim, Cartoon Network’s late-night adult-oriented programming block. The series is beloved by fans for its dark tone and take on sci-fi tropes and conventions. The series’ fourth season finished back in May of this year, and a fifth season is well into production. Adult Swim ordered 70 episodes in 2018, meaning that there are at least 60 episodes remaining in the deal (after season 4’s total of 10).
Rick and Morty won the Emmy for “The Vat of Acid Episode,” the eighth episode in its fourth season. Co-creator Dan Harmon (known for voicing Rick Sanchez and creating the show Community) thanked the entire Rick and Morty crew in pre-recorded speech for their efforts on this season. The series beat FOX Animation’s The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers and Netflix’s Big Mouth and Bojack Horseman. While losing in this category, Big Mouth did see a win in another category for voice actor Maya Rudolph (Big Hero 6). In the other major animation Emmy category, the Pixar series Forky Asks A Question won for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program.
