Richard Gadd’s Newest Series ‘Lions’ In The Works With HBO and BBC

A new series from Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer, Sex Education) is in the works with HBO and BBC, with Eshref Reybrouck (Cheyenne & Lola, Ferry: The Series) and Alexandra Brodski (Joy, Somewhere Boy) set to direct, according to the official Warner Bros. Discovery press release. The series title is Lions and will be a six episode drama.

Per the press release, the show’s logline is as follows: “When Niall’s estranged ‘brother’ Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives. Spanning almost forty years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way. It will capture the wild energy of a changing city – a changing world, even – and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?”

Executive producers on the project are Gadd himself, Morven Reid (Chloe, Pure) and Tally Garner (Boy A, Broken) with a Banijay UK company, Mam Tor Productions, Gavin Smith (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Ginger Snaps) with BBC Scotland and Gaynor Holmes (Monarch of the Glen, Vigil) with the BBC. Wendy Griffin (Calibre, Retribution) is also set to produce the series, via the press release

In the press release, Gadd expressed his excitement at the opportunity to work with the HBO network, saying that, “Ordering a HBO boxset of The Sopranos, The Wire, or Oz and watching it from start to finish were some of the happiest moments of my childhood. Since then, it has always been a dream of mine to work with HBO and be part of their iconic roster of shows. I am so grateful to Francesca Orsi, Kara Buckley and Clint LaVigne for taking this chance on the show and on Ruben and Niall too who – despite growing up in a dead-end Scottish town – would be absolutely pinching themselves at this! I cannot wait to get started.”

While Lions is still in its early phases of production, the show will be available to watch through HBO and BBC’s networks in the future. Gadd’s new project follows recent alleged defamation controversies and award nominations with his series Baby Reindeer, via mxdwn.
