In season two episode ten of Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, titled ‘No Weddings and a Funeral,’ Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham, Game of Thrones) deals with the immense and life-altering loss of her father, while Ted (Jason Sudeikis, We’re The Millers) continues to grapple with the loss of his own father from when he was 16. The episode picks up from the events of episode eight, when Sam (Toheeb Jimoh, Anthony) and Rebecca begin their secret and scandalous relationship, and Ted is still in the process of working through his anxiety with the team’s therapist, Sharon (Sarah Niles, Beautiful People).
Rebecca hears of her father’s death through another surprise appearance from her mother, who is seemingly nonchalant about her newfound widow status. To Rebecca’s surprise, the entire Richmond team arrived at her father’s funeral, including Keeley (Juno Temple, Killer Joe) and Roy (Brett Goldstein, SuperBob), who continue a fight throughout the episode about the latter’s coolness about death. Not seen at the funeral, however, was Ted; while getting ready, he experienced another panic attack and reverted back into his sad and anxious state. Luckily, he called Sharon for an at-home session, where she suggested that the funeral brought up unresolved feelings about his father’s death. Sudeikis truly deserves all the recognition he’s received for his acting in Ted Lasso, especially for his portrayal of a grief-striken and broken Ted in this episode. It’s the most dramatic and run-down we’ve seen his character so far in the series, and it was easy to succumb to tears during his scenes.
While at the funeral, Rebecca gossips with Keeley and Sassy (Ellie Taylor, The Mash Report) about her secret lover and they eventually guess who it is. This girl talk (at a funeral, nonetheless) soon turns melancholy when the girls leave and Rebecca and her mom are left to discuss the elephant in the room. The conversation leads to Rebecca revealing that she hates her father for treating her mother so poorly, and that she once caught him cheating on her. Rebecca’s mom then reveals that she knew of his adultery all these years and only put up with it because “once [she] starts loving something, [she] can’t stop.” However, she goes on to commend Rebecca for her courageous ability to leave her cheating husband when she had the chance.
Speaking of Rebecca’s love life, this conversation leads to Rebecca’s realization that she must end her situationship with Sam until she can figure out what she wants in life and how she can be with him without concerns over him hurting her like she has been hurt before by most of the men in her life. While this is happening, Keeley finds out just how different she is from Roy, and begins noticing how much Jamie (Phil Dunster, The Rise of the Krays) has changed since they broke up. Jamie professes his love for her after the ceremony, to which she doesn’t respond. It is hard to say what’s in store for each of these characters in the upcoming episodes.
Overall, this episode was emotional, comedic, and altogether satisfying. While Rebecca and Sam’s relationship was short-lived, something says this isn’t the last of them. Ted also got one step closer to closure from his father’s death, which he still garners anger for. Lastly, Keeley may be forced to make a difficult decision soon about two men in her life who both hold equal value in her life.
