CBS is doubling down with another round of Queen Latifah’s The Equalizer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The network has ordered another season of the 1980s reboot hit drama for the 2021-2022 season. With only four episodes aired, the show has performed with great ratings following its solid post-Super Bowl premiere.
“We’re extremely proud to see this outstanding broadcast drama, led by Queen Latifah, punch through the competitive landscape and return for a second season” said CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
On Super Bowl night, the premiere averaged 20.4 million viewers, churning out 23.8 million with the delayed viewing. The Equalizer is the most watched show on network television not including sports, with an average of 14.6 million viewers per episode. The series averages a 2.8 rating among adults 18-49 including the Super Bowl episode boost.
Queen Latifah stars in the reboot drama as Robyn McCall, a former CIA operative. McCall uses the skills and contacts from her former career to help people who have nowhere else to turn. The hour long series also features Chris Noth (Law & Order, Sex and The City), Lorraine Toussaint (Orange is The New Black, Into The Badlands), Tory Kittles (USA’s Colony, HBO’s True Detective), Adam Goldberg (Saving Private Ryan, Dazed and Confused), Liza Lapira (NCIS, Super Fun Night), and Laya Deleon Hayes (Raven’s Home, Doc McStuffins).
Dana Owens (Queen Latifah) executive produces the show along with Andrew Marlowe (Air Force One, Hollow Man), Terri Miller (Take Two), John Davis (I, Robot, Dr. Dolittle), John Fox (The Blacklist, Game Night), Debra Martin Chase (The Princess Diaries), Shakim Compere (Bringing Down The House, Scream: The TV Series), and the late co-creator of the original series Richard Lindheim, who passed away earlier this year. Lindheim is also responsible for the films The Equalizer and The Equalizer 2 starring Denzel Washington
The series produced by Universal Television in association with CBS Studios is the third show to be confirmed for CBS’ 2021-2022 season lineup. The drama joins renewals of CBS comedies The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola according to The Hollywood Reporter.
