Priyanka Chopra Is Developing a Bollywood Inspired Comedy at ABC

Priyanka Chopra may be known best in the United States as the actress behind Quantico‘s leading lady Alex Parrish, but she is about to prove that she is just as talented behind the camera. Variety confirmed on Friday that the actress is currently working with ABC to develop a comedy series about a former Bollywood star. Chopra is set to work as an executive producer on the series.

The currently untiled series is based off of the real life experiences of Madhuri Dixit, a well known Indian actress that is known for her various roles in Hindi cinema. Dixit will also serve as an executive producer on the series. Following her move to America, the series will follow the main character’s life in a suburban town that lacks diversity. The character inspired by Dixit will be part of a bi-cultural family that is ready to leave their mark on a relatively quiet town.

Bollywood writer Sri Rao is set to write the pilot and executive produce the series. Sriram Nene, Dixit’s husband, will also serve as an executive producer. Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper will executive produce through Gordon’s company, MGC. The production company currently works on Ray Donovan, Quantico and Grey’s Anatomy. ABC will co-produce along with MGC.

Chopra took to her personal Twitter account on Saturday morning to make the news of her new role official. In a quote tweet that features Variety’s original announcement, the actress wrote, “One of the favorite parts of my job..” She also tagged her fellow co-exectuive producers in the tweet.

Rao also shared his excitement on Twitter about the upcoming project. He posted a picture of himself, Chopra and Dixit along with the caption, “Thrilled to finally announce my exciting new project with these two legends and icons.”

Chopra first made a name for herself in 2000 when she won the Miss World beauty pageant while representing India. By 2005 she was starring in Bollywood films and would eventually become a household name in India as one of Bollywood’s most famous actresses. After signing a talent holding deal with ABC, Chopra began playing Alex Parrish in the American thriller Quantico beginning in 2015. She made her live-action Hollywood film debut in the 2017 action comedy film Baywatch as antagonist Victoria Leeds alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron. She is currently filming the upcoming drama film A Kid Just Like Jake. She will star as Amal. Claire Danes, Jim Parsons, and Octavia Spencer will also star in the film.
