With the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash approaching, Sigourney Weaver (The Gorge, Alien) will possibly already have another role lined up for her. Multiple sources tell Deadline that, while nothing is settled, Weaver is a strong candidate to star in Prime Video’s live action adaptation of video game franchise Tomb Raider.
Sophie Turner (Joan, Game of Thrones) has been cast as Lara Croft in the series, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge (A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Killing Eve) writing and executive producing, according to Deadline. Prime Video did not comment on the reports, and it is unclear who Weaver would play.
Alongside Waller-Bridge, Chad Hodge (Single All the Way, Good Behavior) will executive produce and serve as co-showrunner, with Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, Dope Thief) directing and executive producing, Deadline reports. Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the series is set to begin shooting January 19.
Per Deadline, The series is co-produced by Tomb Raider’s developer Crystal Dynamics, along with Dmitri M. Johnson’s (Sonic the Hedgehog, Split Fiction) Story Kitchen, Waller Bridge and Jenny Robins’ (Octopus!, Run) Wells Street Productions, Mike Goldberg (Dredge, Life Is Strange), Timothy I. Stevenson (Rival Speak, The Spiderwick Chronicles), Michael Scheel (Unknown, Inglourious Basterds), and Legendary Television.
The Tomb Raider series, whose details have been kept largely hidden, is based on the popular action-adventure video game franchise of the same name, which first released in 1996. The games follow Lara Croft, a British archaeologist who explores dangerous ruins filled with traps, hostile animals, and other enemies, while searching for lost artifacts.
If Weaver is confirmed for the series, it will add yet another distinguished franchise to her list of works, which includes James Cameron’s (Alita: Battle Angel, Aliens) Avatar series and the Alien sci-fi horror franchise. She is set to appear in the third Avatar installment, Fire and Ash, when it releases on December 19, as well as Star Wars spinoff The Mandalorian and Grogu next year. She will also hit screens this weekend in Dust Bunny from first time director Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies).
