Prentice Penny Pens Overall Deal at Disney’s Onyx Collective

Insecure showrunner and director Prentice Penny (The Hustle) has just signed a multi-year deal with Disney General Entertainment’s Onyx Collective, via Deadline. His company, A Penny for Your Thoughts Ent., will develop and produce multiple projects for Disney platforms, including Hulu.

According to sources at Deadline, the deal will last for about four years and is “well into four figures.” Penny will be completely involved in the projects produced under the deal and will serve as a producer, writer, and/or director. A Penny for Your Thoughts Entertainment will continue to produce premium comedy, drama, and late-night series for the deal as well as entering new areas of content.

“I could not be more excited to partner with Onyx Collective for the next phase of my career,” Penny said while announcing the deal via Deadline. “The second I sat down with Dana [Walden, chairman of Walt Disney television] and Tara [Duncan, president of Freeform and Onyx Collective] I knew I wanted to work with them and make this my new home. To be at the ground floor of what Tara and the entire Onyx Collective team wants to be is an honor.”

Penny awaits the release of the fifth and final season of HBO’s Insecure which stars series creator Issa Rae (The Lovebirds). Production on the season recently wrapped in June and awaits release. He also has a number of projects in progress at HBO including a series adaptation of Marjan Kamali’s novel, The Stationery Shop, with Mozhan Marnò and a comedy series in development with Atlanta’s Janine Nabers.

Chris Pollack, A Penny for Your Thoughts Entertainment President and Partner, will continue his role under the deal. The company’s development team, under Alex Soler, will also move to Onyx and continue in their respective roles.

Both Penny and the executives at Disney noted their excitement for the new deal. Penny also expressed his excitement for the new reaches this new deal brings him with talent and storytelling. “As a writer/director/producer you always want to have as many tools at your disposal to create your art and all of the various platforms under the Disney brand just made for a beautiful marriage,” he said.
