A post that has since been deleted from Netflix’s Netherlands social media accounts leaked the potential release date for The Witcher. The post revealed the release dates of 10 upcoming projects. The Witcher was among them. The post made the announcement by explaining “how many sleeps until” each show aired. The Witcher had 97, making its release date December 17th, 2019.
Sources have yet to confirm why the post was deleted, although IGN explained that it could have been removed from social media due to inaccurate information or the fact that Netflix was not ready to reveal this news. This makes December 17th the potential release date, but as of now, nothing is certain.
When IGN reached out to Netflix for comment, the streamer explained that “the release date for The Witcher is not yet confirmed.” December 17th is also an unlikely release date given the fact that it falls on Tuesday, and Netflix generally reserves Fridays for the releases of major projects.
The Witcher is a television adaptation of books by Andrzej Sapkowski, a Polish author, rather than from the CD Projekt Red games which have amassed a sizeable fanbase. Geralt of Rivia is the main character in both the books, video game, and the television show, however, the video game’s timeline is significantly different from the upcoming Netflix series. That being said, showrunner Lauren Hissrich has spoken to the adaptation’s faithfulness to its source material. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, Hissrich said, “I’d call it an addition to the books. We really took the books and honored that source material.” Meanwhile, the show will have no connection to the games.
Geralt will be played by Henry Cavill (Superman). Anya Chalotra has been cast in the role of Yennifer and Freya Allan will play Ciri.
