According to Avalon, following a whirlwind few years of success on the global stage, comedian Phil Wang (Taskmakers, Roadt Battle, Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared) is set to release his highly anticipated second Netflix Original stand-up special, Wang in There, Baby! on September 3. The special follows the success of his critically acclaimed debut, Philly Philly Wang Wang, and is sure to cement Wang’s status as one of the most prominent voices in comedy today.
Wang in There, Baby! was filmed at the historic Sam Wanamaker (Raw Deal, Pure Luck, Catlow) Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe’s only candlelit theatre. The unique venue provided an intimate backdrop for Wang’s signature blend of wit and humor as he delved into a wide range of topics, including his experiences as a British-Asian, the quirks of American culture, the fascinating world of octopuses and the complexities of navigating minor fame.
As mentioned by Avalon, Wang’s latest show has been a global hit, with the comedian performing to sold-out audiences across several continents. The two-year international tour included stops in the United States, where Wang performed two sold-out shows in Los Angeles as part of the Netflix Is A Joke Festival, as well as appearances at prestigious comedy events like Montreal’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival and Australia’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The show’s UK run was equally impressive, with Wang embarking on a twice-extended 64-date tour that included packed houses at London’s Royal Festival Hall and the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo.
Also mentioned by Avalon, Wang has been making waves on screen. He recently made his film debut in the highly anticipated movie Wonka alongside Timothée Chalamet (Dune, Wonka, Call Me By Your Name), and has also appeared as a guest on The Graham Norton Show. Wang’s first Netflix special, Philly Philly Wang Wang, premiered in 2021 to widespread acclaim, and his television appearances have since included stand-up performances on Late Night with Seth Meyers and a notable interview on That’s My Time with David Letterman. Other credits include appearances on Inside Amy Schumer, Life & Beth, The Comedy Line-Up, Taskmaster and Live at the Apollo.
Wang’s success extends beyond the stage and screen, according to Avalon. As a lifelong gamer, he hosted the 20th BAFTA Games Awards in April 2024, celebrating the best in the gaming industry. As an author, his first book, Sidesplitter, released in 2021, received critical acclaim and was featured on The Times and Sunday Times’ Books of the Year list. On radio, Wang wrote and starred in his own Radio 4 special, Wangsplaining, which won Best Scripted Comedy at the 2020 BBC Audio Awards. He also fronts the Audible original series Phil Wang Hates Horror and co-hosts the popular podcast BudPod with Pierre Novellie (The Island, Chubby Funny, Content).
Wang in There, Baby! is produced by Avalon and has been commissioned by Netflix. As the release date approaches, fans and newcomers alike can look forward to another hilarious and insightful offering from one of comedy’s most original voices.
