The musical stylings of Girls5eva made an appearance at this month’s SXSW Festival in Austin. According to Deadline, the Peacock comedy announced its second season premiere date during a panel with the main cast and show creator, Meredith Scardino (The Colbert Report, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). The series also debuted an exclusive peek at what’s to come for the reunited girl group. View the teaser clip below.
Girls5eva centers on four former 90s girl group members who reunite to recapture the spotlight. The band is made up of Sara Bareilles’ (Little Voice, Made of Honor) Dawn, Renée Elise Goldsberry’s (tick, tick…BOOM!, Evil) Wickie, Paula Pell’s (30 Rock, Inside Out) Gloria, and Busy Philips’ (Cougar Town, White Chicks) Summer. While the first season saw the women reconnect and discover the music was still there, the second season will watch them attempt to record and release an actual album.
The panel, led by series co-star Andrew Rannells (The New Normal, Black Monday) also discussed some of the behind-the-scenes antics that occurred while filming the second season in New York. According to Deadline, Pell found herself incorporating a real-life knee injury into the series, which she humored left her doing some “sexy cane work.”
Another surprise to the audience and cast was Scardino announcing an unfortunate edit she made. Goldsberry’s Wickie had performed an inspired number based on Bruce Springsteen’s music. However, Scardino admitted she “overpacks these episodes,” and had to leave that particular scene on the cutting room floor.
Deadline reports Philips admitted she’s finally fulfilling the cliche that all actors want to be rock stars. She even jokingly talked about wanting to do an actual mall tour. She added that they would have to “resurrect malls first.”
The Universal Television-produced comedy is executive produced by Scardino, Robert Carlock (Friends, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot), Tina Fey (Mean Girls, Saturday Night Live), David Miner (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place), Eric Gurian (Busy Tonight, Sisters), and Jeff Richmond (Great News, Baby Mama), according to Deadline.
The first three episodes of Girls5eva will be available to stream on May 5 with additional episodes dropping weekly exclusively on Peacock.
