Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen’s ‘WandaVision’ Disney+ Series Described as “Half Sitcom, Half MCU Spectacular”

Disney+’s WandaVision is labeled as a “half sitcom, half MCU spectacular” which sounded strange for Marvel moviegoers, but according to Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda), that’s the way it should be. “There are plenty of comic books that support why both of these characters should be in sitcom,” she said.

While answering questions about his new venture on Disney+, Paul Bettany (Vision) further explained the strange concept of this mix that’s described as a 1950s family sitcom with an adventurous flavor to it. “It’s definitely the oddest of all the Marvel endeavors so far,” said Bettany. “It’s super avant-garde and weird. I don’t think either of us could have expected to be going in this — if we were going to continue in this — [and for] it to continue in this direction. I’m so excited, the scripts are amazing. It’s going to be just great to drill down further into these things.”

Showrunner Jac Schaeffer (Captain Marvel) is set to deliver this entry into Disney+’s section of Marvel TV shows. “I mean, first of all, with Marvel doing Disney+, it’s not at all the small screen, you know? It’s still the big screen, but streaming,” said Schaeffer. “And so there’s still the same sense of grandeur and the same scope and the same opportunities and the same resources, so it just really feels like an enormous movie. We say it’s like a run of a comic, which is just really exciting to do.”

Schaeffer’s take on WandaVision coincides with the ideas Feige shared at Disney’s investor presentation meeting back in April. “These shows will be on the same level of quality that you’ve come to expect [from Marvel Studios films],” said Feige. Fans expect nothing less of a power-packed, entertaining wide array of Marvel shows.

WandaVision is set to premiere in Spring of 2021.
