According to Deadline’s recent report, Paramount+ is set to release a limited series, JonBenét Ramsey, which is currently a working title, and will explore the tragic and highly publicized unsolved murder of six-year-old beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey. The series, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, has assembled a stellar cast, including Emily Mitchell (The Apprentice, Women Talking, Out Of My Mind) in the title role, Garrett Hedlund (Tulsa King, Tron: Legacy, Pan), Alison Pill (Trap, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Cooties) and Owen Teague (The Friend, IT, The Stand).
As mentioned by Deadline, Mitchell will portray JonBenét Ramsey, a young girl from a wealthy family whose murder on Christmas night in 1996 shocked the nation and remains unsolved. Hedlund will take on the role of Detective Steve Thomas, a seasoned investigator assigned to the case. Pill will portray Detective Linda Arndt, one of the first officers on the scene after JonBenét’s disappearance was reported. Finally, Teague is set to play Jeff Shapiro, a brash reporter for the tabloid The Globe, who becomes involved in the media circus surrounding the case.
As previously announced, Melissa McCarthy (Spy, Bridesmaids, The Heat) and Clive Owen (Closer, Children Of Men, Inside Man) will portray JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey. Shea Whigham (Take Shelter, Splinter, Fancy Dance) has been cast as District Attorney Alex Hunter, a family acquaintance, while Will Patton (The Postman, Rember the Titans, No Way Out) will take on the role of Lou Smit, a legendary homicide detective with over 150 cases under his belt.
According to Deadline, the series, led by Oscar-nominated producer Richard LaGravenese (Behind the Candelabra, A Family Affair, The Fisher King), will delve into the lives of the Ramsey family before and after the tragedy, portraying the media frenzy and public scrutiny they endured. At its core, the show will explore the bond between Patsy and John Ramsey as they cope with their devastating loss while facing the intense pressures of maintaining their privileged public image.
Production for the series is currently underway in Calgary, Canada. Mitchell, who has garnered attention for her portrayal of Ivanka Trump in the biopic The Apprentice, has also appeared in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, Lionsgate’s Ordinary Angels, and Sarah Polley’s Women Talking.
Hedlund, known for his roles in Tulsa King and Lawmen: Bass Reeves, will next star in the thriller Barron’s Cove. Pill has recently starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and the psychological thriller Star Trek: Picard. Meanwhile, fresh from his success in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Teague will appear in HBO’s Task and the crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King.
With an impressive ensemble cast and the backing of top industry talent, JonBenét Ramsey is shaping up to be one of Paramount+’s most anticipated limited series.
