‘Orange is the New Black’ Stars Go Beyond Acting, They’re Powerhouse Leaders

It goes without saying that many of us are eagerly anticipating and have so many questions about the cliffhangers that we were left with after the Season 3 finale of “Orange is the New Black.” Will there be a reconciliation between Daya and Josh? Will Pennsatucky and Big Boo stop the predator guard before he inevitably assaults his new helper Maritza? Will Kubra’s (drug-lord) henchman Aydin murder Alex? So many questions and unfortunately we have quite a bit of waiting to do before we get answers.

But on the other hand, we do know that many cast members of “Orange is the New Black” have kept themselves busy with varying community-based projects.

Actresses Diane Guerrero and Jackie Cruz, known for their portrayal of Flaca and Maritza on “OITNB”, are currently participating in the Mi Familia Vota (MFV) campaign. MFV, is a national nonprofit Latino civic engagement group. The MFV campaign seeks to urge Latinos to register to vote. Check out Guerrero’s and Cruz’s video here:

Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper on “OITNB” has also been participating in an important cause. According to South Coast Today , Schilling recently provided a cast-signed “Orange is the New Black” shirt for a fundraiser at the Renaissance Community School for the Arts in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Schilling’s father, Bob Schilling is actively involved on the Renaissance School’s governing board.

The autographed shirt is up for bidding on eBay for a few more days.

Lea DeLaria, who portrays the lovable Big Boo on “OITNB” has made continuous efforts to advocate for LGBTQ rights. Some of her guest speaking gigs included the Los Angeles AIDS Walk fundraiser which drew thousands of people and most recently at Penn State University for the National Coming Out Week.

And we can’t forget about the Emmy Award-nominated actress Laverne Cox, who plays Sophia on “OITNB”. In addition to her talented acting chops which landed her an Emmy nomination, she is known by many to be a current pivotal leader in transgender rights. Cox has been actively advocating for transgender equality on multiple platforms. The Press Democrat reported that Cox is set to speak at Sonoma State University on Thursday, November 12 during the Woman in Leadership Lecture Series.

Kudos to all these amazing actors on “Orange Is the New Black,” for being positive role-models and for working towards impacting their communities for the better.
