Oprah Winfrey Returns to Scripted Television in ‘Greenleaf’

According to Variety, OWN released the first trailer for its new family drama titled Greenleaf. Which brings Ms. Oprah Winfrey back to scripted television after twenty year break.

Greenleaf is set against the backdrop of a sprawling Memphis megachurch and follows the journey of estranged daughter and disillusioned preacher Grace Greenleaf (Merle Dandridge). Her powerful parents Bishop James Greenleaf (Keith David) and Lady Mae Greenleaf (Lynn Whitfield) run the Memphis megachurch. Grace returns home after 20 years on the occasion of the mysterious death of her sister, Faith. Upon returning to the world of Calvary Fellowship World Ministries, it becomes apparent that things are not as virtuous as they appear and that the family’s outward display of fatih hides sin and misdeeds. Winfrey will be playing Grace’s aunt Mavis McCready.

Clement Virgo (The Book of Negroes) is directing the drama series and Emmy-nominated writer/producer Craig Wright (Lost, Six Feet Under) will executive-produce the series along with Winfrey,and Virgo. Greenleaf is produced for OWN by Lionsgate Television.

The series will launch with a two-night premiere on Tuesday, June 21 at 10 PM and on Wednesday, June 22 at 10 PM on OWN.

Following the premiere, Greenleaf will air regularly on Wednesdays at 10 PM for the remainder of its 13-episode first season.
