Fans of Bosch can welcome another addition to the televised universe. Deadline reports Cameron Monaghan and Omari Hardwick will lead a prequel series following Harry Bosch’s years as a rookie officer. Bosch: Start of Watch is coming to MGM+.
Based on the novels by Michael Connelly (The Safe Man, Level 9), the character was brought to life in Prime Video’s longest-running original series, Bosch, with Titus Welliver (The Westies, Ricky) starring as the spirited but volatile former LAPD officer, Harry Bosch. The original series expanded to Bosch: Legacy, which ran for three seasons. It followed Bosch’s departure from the LAPD as he began his own practice as a private investigator. Finally, this year, Bosch: Legacy’s final season delivered Maggie Q (Divergent, The Protege) as Ballard, following a former LAPD homicide officer taking on a slew of Los Angeles cold cases.
According to Deadline, Monaghan (Shameless, Gotham) will portray Bosch as a rookie with Hardwick (Power, Spell) serving as Training Officer, Eli Bridges, a new character not explored in Connelly’s original works. While there’s no blueprint to adapt for this narrative, Connelly welcomes it as “uncharted character territory,” only pulling from clues and information alluded to in other novels. The series, set in 1991 Los Angeles, follows young Harry learning the ropes within an embattled LAPD and city wrestling with racial tension, gang violence, and corruption. He and his moral code will be tested, forever shaping his future and how he weilds the power of the badge.
This version of Bosch is described as “smart, relentless, determined” and “fiercely protective of the victims of crime,” according to Deadline. Hardwick’s Bridges is a “seasoned, salty, rough-around-the-edges” training officer who served in Vietnam. He will mentor Bosch into navigating the LA streets and the LAPD.
“We are thrilled to expand the Bosch universe with this compelling origin story that showcases how one of television’s most beloved detectives became the man we know today,” Michael Wright, head of MGM+, told Deadline. “With Cameron Monaghan and Omari Hardwick bringing these complex characters to life, and the creative vision of Michael Connelly and our talented executive producers, Bosch: Start of Watch promises to deliver the gritty, authentic storytelling that honors the franchise’s legacy while opening an exciting new chapter.”
Deadline lists some familiar names as helming the series. Tom Bernardo (The Lincoln Lawyer) and Brian Anthony (Station 19), both EPs on Bosch: Legacy, are co-creators for the series, with Bernardo attached as showrunner. Additional executive producers include Henrick Bastin (Brilliant Minds, Ballard), Jasmine Russ (Season, Bosch: Legacy), Jamie Boscardin Martin (Circle of Eight, Old Dads), and Connelly. Theresea Snider (Power Trip, Ballard) is a co-executive producer through Hieronymus Pictures. Seth Yanklewitz (New Girl, Shifting Gears) leads casting for the series.
“I’m deeply grateful to Michael Wright and the team at MGM+ for championing this next chapter in Bosch’s journey with such remarkable care and integrity,” Connelly said via Deadline. “Being able to see how Harry Bosch became the man we have loved for 10 seasons is a gift to me and his many fans. I can’t wait to dig in with Cameron and the writers to explore this uncharted character territory.”
Deadline reports the series, like its predecessors, will film in LA and received a tax credit of $11.6M via the California Film Commission.
“By filming in L.A., we’ll be able to tap into the best creative talent this industry has to offer — and in doing so deliver a story about Harry Bosch that fans have longed for,” Bastin said via Deadline. “Thanks to MGM+ for giving us the resources to make it happen, and to the California Tax Credit for bringing business back to L.A.!”
“It’s a terrific privilege to be able to explore both the origins of this iconic character and the Los Angeles that formed him in the early 1990s,” Bernardo said via Deadline. “In telling the story of a young Harry Bosch, we want to honor the faith of Michael Connelly’s legion of readers and the amazing audience that tuned into Bosch and Bosch: Legacy over the years. We’re excited to embark on this journey.”
All seasons of Bosch, Bosch: Legacy, and Ballard are available to stream on Prime Video. Bosch: Start of Watch will reach audiences worldwide in the United States, the UK, Latin America, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and Spain exclusively on MGM+.
