The creator of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie Liz Brixius has just signed a television developmental deal with Miramax, according to Deadline. The deal follows previous Miramax signing of producer Michael Edelstein as well. Brixius’ new deal is set over the span of a few years and will be for her to continue to create and produce original content for the premium network at hand. Brixius commented on Miramax approaching her with this offer by stating that she is “really good at taking an existing piece of material and reshaping it and reframing it, so the idea of having a source material to draw on or build out is incredibly attractive to me,” via Deadline. Currently, there is no word on the exact details of this overall television deal.
Brixius has been an active television writer with writing credits for the medical drama Chicago Med, the short-lived Kate Walsh (Legion, Grey’s Anatomy) comedy Bad Judge, and the Matthew Perry (Friends) NBC comedy series Go On. She is most known for her creation, writing credits, and producing credits on the Showtime comedy-drama program Nurse Jackie which premiered in 2019. The series followed Edie Falco (The Sopranos) as Jackie Peyton, a mother who juggles being an ER nurse in New York City with raising her children while also suffering from drug addiction. The series ran for seven seasons consisting and amassed four Primetime Emmy awards including Outstanding Lead Actress for Edie Falco in 2010. The show’s cast also includes Merritt Wever (The Walking Dead, Marriage Story), Haaz Sleiman (Killing Jesus), Eve Best (The King’s Speech), Paul Schulze (Zodiac, Sopranos), and Peter Facinelli (Can’t Hardly Wait, Supergirl). The series can be streamed in its entirety on Netflix.
Marc Helwig, the Head of Worldwide Television for Miramax, commented on the new deal with Brixius by stating to Deadline that “Liz is exactly the sort of artist we want to be in business with at Miramax going forward. I consider her to be one of the most compelling and authentic storytellers of her generation.”
