Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Reacts to ‘GOT’ Spinoff Rumors

Game of Thrones is ending, you guys. Not now–we still have over a month before the premiere of season seven (*squeal*). But nevertheless, the time of winter and dragons is sadly coming to a close for its eighth and final season.

However, with a story as mysterious and laden with characters as GOT, there have been talks about keeping the embers of George R.R. Martin’s story alive. Rumors of prequels and spinoffs have been drifting around the ether for quite a while now, but The Playlist reports that news of the spinoffs have been gaining some traction with HBO. Writers from almost every branch of TV and film (Max Borenstein from Godzilla, Brian Helgeland from L.A. Confidential, Jane Goldman from Kingsman, and Carly Wray from Mad Men and Westworld) have all begun meeting with Martin to hammer out their story ideas.

Unfortunately, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has already withdrawn himself from any storylines using his character Jaime Lannister. According to The Playlist, Coster-Waldau commented, “No, it is of no interest. I don’t want to seem ungrateful because God knows Game of Thrones has been a positive experience on every level. I have been very lucky, and it’s been so fun playing Jaime. But it’s a long time of your professional life to spend on one thing and one character. And the series has just grown so big. The first couple of years the attention was peaking when the series was on, and then it relaxed a bit. But now it’s a more constant thing. I wouldn’t mind if things got a little less intense.”

Even us hardened fantasy nerds can understand Coster-Waldau’s point. Is there anything that can top the intense mania behind a series like Game of Thrones?

Season seven of Game of Thrones premieres on July 16th on HBO.
