For fans of multi-cams and laughs all around, the reboot of Night Court will provide even more entertainment after NBC renewed the series for a second season. Following the show’s first episode on January 17th, it has garnered the title of number one broadcast premiere of the 2022-2023 season thus far, via. Deadline.
The original series with the same name ran from 1984-1992 on NBC and originally starred Harry Anderson (Dave’s World, A Matter of Faith) as Judge Harry T. Stone. In this reboot, actor and comedian Melissa Raunch (The Big Bang Theory, The Bronze) plays Abby Stone, the late judge’s daughter. They both presided over a Manhattan arrangement court and just like the original, there would be much to enjoy according to the 25.7 Million viewers since January.
Dan Rubin (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Village) is the showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the show along with executive producers Melissa Rauch as well as her husband, Winston Rauch (The Bronze, The Condom Killer). The episodes would be directed by Anthony Rich (The Big Bang Theory, Mom) and Pamela Fryman (How I Met Your Mother, Frasier).
Joining Melissa for the regular cast would include John Larroquette (Baa Baa Black Sheep, The John Larroquette Show) returning as prosecutor Dan Fielding from the old show, India de Beaufort (Jane by Design, Chicago P.D.) as Olivia, Kapil Talwalkar (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Love Pyar Whatever) as Neil, and Lacretta (Gotham, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) as Donna “Gurgs” Gurganous.
Night Court would be available to watch right on NBC on Tuesday evenings. The show’s pilot has 6.4/10 stars on IMDb with each episode rating increasing as the fourth episode has rating of 7.3/10. According to Deadline, the pilot ranked first for broadcast premiere encompassing the 18-49 age range and in total audience as well as the highest viewership for a comedy premiere since ABC’s The Conners in 2018. For NBC itself, Night court has proved its success to top its previous best comedy premiere, Will & Grace in 2017.
With so many achievements thus far, it is not a surprise to fans and newer audiences that the show would be good to go for a second season. Along with NBC’s Universal Television, the show is made in collaboration between January Productions as well as Warner Bros. Television via Deadline.
