‘New Girl’ Vet Jake Johnson Added to Cast of ABC’s ‘Stumptown’

Comedian Jake Johnson has been confirmed to be cast in ABC’s upcoming fall drama, Stumptown, which will also star HIMYM and Agents of SHIELD alumna, Cobie Smulders. The pair also previously starred together in voice over roles for Sony Pictures Animation’s, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Smulders previously was confirmed to play lead, Dex Parios, a clever Army veteran who investigates a variety of cases in her hometown of Portland, Oregon, with Johnson –replacing the previously cast Mark Webber– in the role of Dex’s best friend Grey McConnell.

Based on Greg Rucka’s work of the same name, the graphic novel began in medias res with Parios’ attempted murder and the subsequent events leading up to her attack, as she attempts to track down the granddaughter of a casino owner she owes money to. However, the television adaption has added in more character backstory and the inclusion of romantic history between the two leads.

The show’s official description reads: “a strong, assertive and sharp-witted Army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt and a brother to take care of in Portland, Oregon, uses her military intelligence skills to become a great P.I. But her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police.”

Actors Michael Ealy (Secrets and Lies, Almost Human), Camryn Manheim (The Practice), Adrian Martinez (No Activity), Cole Sibus and Tantoo Cardinal, make up the supporting cast. The series will be headed by Jason Richman (Mercy Street, Detroit 1-8-7), who will also take on executive producer duties.
