‘New Girl’ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Joining Forces for Special Crossover Event

Hey girl, watcha doing?

Having a crossover with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, that’s what.

Of all the crazy things happening on TV, today Fox announced during the Television Critics Association panel that New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine would be teaming up for a special crossover event. Already the two comedies air back-to-back on Tuesdays, and the crossover will be an hour-long event spanning when both shows would normally air.

The network has yet to explain what type of plot would prompt both casts to join together for the event.

These days, crossovers are becoming more and more common. On the CW, shows like Arrow and The Flash will have crossover episodes regularly, but then again these particular shows share the same production studios and Greg Berlanti as either a creator or executive producer. That and The Flash began as a spin-off of Arrow.

But all Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl have in common is the network. While both air on Fox, they are produced by different studios.

According to The Hollywood ReporterNew Girl creator, Elizabeth Meriwether released a tongue-in-cheek statement about the crossover, stating, “The crossover episode has historically been the artistic high point of any show that has dared to attempt it. Maybe you remember ‘Blackout Thursday’ on NBC, or even further back the infamous Alf/Gilligan’s Island crossover of the late 1980s. New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s. We know we have big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone. There’s a 50% chance Alf will also be in both episodes. But there’s also a 50% chance that is a lie.”

While Meriwether was kidding when she said they look forward to disappointing everyone, it is true that any sort of project like this is a risk. But currently both New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are the longest running comedies on Fox (now that almost all of them were cancelled). Brooklyn Nine-Nine is heading into its fourth season, and New Girl will begin its sixth season this fall. New Girl also recently reached its 100th episode land-mark, therefore the crossover looks like great uncharted territory for the comedy to explore.

Dan Goor,Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s co-creator, also released a statement about the crossover, saying “Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossing over with New Girl is very exciting, but (and this is supposed to be a secret) it’s just the first step. Stay tuned for our two casts to do a soulful R&B number on Empire, co-anchor the Fox 10 O’Clock News and connect for a touchdown on Fox NFL Sunday. But in all seriousness, we’re all huge fans of New Girl here at the Nine-Nine, and we’re excited to see our characters interact and to work with their incredible writers and producers. And also to see what their craft services are like, compared to ours.”

The crossover event will take place on October 11 on Fox.
