Just after the shocking premiere of House of the Dragon‘s second season, HBO’s newest spin-off series of Game of Thrones has begun production. HBO announced via press release that filming for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms began filming in Belfast, Ireland.
The series is based upon the novella, The Hedge Knight by Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire, Elden Ring) and follows the adventures of two of Martin’s characters Ser Duncan the Tall — Dunk — and Aegon V Targaryen — Egg. According to a press release from HBO, the longline of the series is as follows; “A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
Earlier this year, HBO announced the lead actors of the upcoming prequel series. Peter Clafley (Harry Wild, Bad Sisters) will be portraying Ser Duncan the Tall, and Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Battle of Songbirds and Snakes, Christmas on Mistletoe Farm) will be portraying Aegon V Targaryen. In a recent press release, HBO announced additional supporting cast, including Finn Bennett (True Detective, Hope Gap) as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel (Dalgliesh, The Tragedy of Macbeth) as Baylor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford (Servant, Tiny Beautiful Things) as Tanselle, Daniel Inge (The Crown, The Gentlemen) as Ser Lyonel Baratheon and Sam Spruell (Snow White and the Huntsmen, Legend) as Maeker Targaryen.
Returning to the franchise, George R.R. Martin serves as writer and executive producer of the prequel series, with Ira Parker (House of the Dragon, The Last Ship) joining Martin as co-executive producer. Sarah Adina Smith (Lessons in Chemistry, Hal) is set to direct three out of six episodes in the series. While fans of Westeros wait for more news regarding A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, all eight seasons of Game of Thrones are available to stream on Max, where the second season of House of the Dragon is currently airing it’s second season on Sundays at 9 PM EST.
