New Featurette for AMC’s ‘Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches’ Teases Themes of Magic and Femininity

As reported by Comicbook.com, a new behind-the-scenes look at AMC’s latest supernatural thriller series Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches has just been released. The show is a live-action adaptation of Anne Rice’s (Interview with the Vampire, The Queen of the Damned) hit book series, The Lives of the Mayfair Witches as the latest addition in AMC’s interconnected Immortal Universe, which shares the same reality as the recently released television reboot, Interview with the Vampire.

The sneak preview gives fans a glimpse at the live-action adaptation’s themes of women, magic, and sisterhood as both the series’ cast and executive producer Esta Spalding (The Last Letter from Your Lover, In God’s Country) share their personal takes on how femininity is expressed throughout the story and relationships in the show. Spalding and the cast also focused on how these themes relate to the titular character of Dr. Rowan Fielding, played by Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief), and how they will manifest in Fielding’s journey of self-discovery and self-confidence. For anyone interested in hearing more, the featurette showcasing these interviews can be found just below.

In the same featurette Spalding stated, “I thought it was such an interesting choice that Anne Rice chose to make her lead character, her protagonist, a doctor. There was this real history of midwives and healers in the Middle Ages in Europe being massacred, being put to death because of their powerful healing abilities. The idea that women can’t help each other and that women can’t control their own bodies is a very provocative idea that’s very much of the now.”

After some minor delays, Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches will debut on January 8, 2023 exclusively on AMC and AMC+. For more information on the development of Mayfair Witches, check out our other articles here and here.
