New Dark Comedy ‘The Shrink Next Door’ Announced to Star Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd

The San Diego KVWN Channel 4 News team is back together again…at least in the form of lead anchor Ron Burgundy and field reporter Brian Fantana. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedy duo of Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd are reuniting for the first time since 2013’s Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues through the new dark comedy series, The Shrink Next Door.

Currently, under the supervision of Media Rights Capital, the series is in the beginning stages of finding a network or streaming service to distribute the content to the masses. With one of Rudd’s past-collaborators in Wet Hot American Summer‘s Michael Showalter who will direct and produce the show, the comedy is attempting to be picked up by a large network, such as in HBO or a streaming service like Netflix.

Ferrell, from Saturday Night Live fame and countless new-age comedy classics, and Rudd, from Clueless and recent contributions as Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are two big-name actors with resumes that help bolster the show’s prospects. While this announcement marks Ferrell’s first return to television as a regular cast member since leaving SNL in 2002, Rudd has recently been refining his craft with his Netflix comedy, Living With Yourself, for which he earned a Globen Globe nomination this year.

The Shrink Next Door aims to follow a relationship between a Hollywood psychiatrist Dr. Isaac Herschkopf, played by Rudd, and one of his frequent patients in Martin Markowitz, played by Ferrell. The series is based on a podcast of the same name and will bring a comedic take to a story of a patient becoming overly involved in his psychiatrist’s life, creating an interesting work-life dynamic for display on the small screen.

The reunion of the two comedic actors will offer a taste of nostalgia for many fans with hopes of seeing a return of discussions like the “Sex Panther” cologne translated onto the small screen. With a proven duo attached to this dark comedy into deliberations for network’s acquisition, the stock for The Shrink Next Door‘s potential has risen significantly since the announcement of the podcast’s adaptation into a series.
