‘Never Have I Ever’ Returns with Season Two Trailer at Netflix

Hell is being a teenage girl. School is back in session and though summer is in full bloom, things are heating up in the hallways for high schooler Devi in the first trailer for season two of Never Have I Ever. The Netflix comedy series will be returning to the streamer on July 15, via Entertainment Weekly

Portrayed by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Sidewalks Entertainment), Devi is back to her old ways in the first glimpses of what’s in store for the sophomore season of Never Have I Ever. The trailer begins with Devi creating a pros and cons list with her best friends Fabiola, portrayed by Lee Rodriguez (Grown-ish), and Eleanor, portrayed by Ramona Young (Santa Clarita Diet). The pros and cons list pertains to the two boys Devi is currently trying to choose between, Paxton, played by Darren Barnet (Turnt) and Ben, played by Jaren Lewison (Tag). As usual, her friends are full of wisdom as Eleanor asks, “On your deathbed, which naked body will you be picturing?” Overwhelmed, Devi decides she can have it all and begins to date both of them.

All the beloved characters have returned and make appearances in the season two trailer, including Devi’s strict mother Dr. Nalini Vishwakumar, played by Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of) and her cousin Kamala, played by Richa Moorjani (9-1-1). Niecy Nash (Claws) also returns in in her recurring role as Devi’s therapist. There are also some new faces, including the actor and rapper Common (Hells on Wheels) who appears in the trailer as fellow doctor and love interest of Devi’s mother. Another newcomer is actress Megan Suri (Fresh Off the Boat) who will play the new girl at school, Aneesa. The trailer depicts Devi becoming enraged with jealousy, complaining that Aneesa is “another Indian girl who’s prettier (and) cooler,” than her.

Created by Mindy Kaling (The Office, Late Night) and Lang Fisher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), they both executive produce alongside Howard Klein (Carnivale), David Miner (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), and Tristram Shapeerp (Absolutely Fabulous). Kaling also serves as a writer on the series, and has been busy promoting the upcoming season. On Twitter this past Monday, Kaling shared a photo of the script cover for season two episode one, titled “…always been a playa.” Kaling wrote, “I was 8 months pregnant in quarantine during the hottest summer ever when I wrote this. I write in bed and my belly almost covered the laptop. It was so fun to disappear into the world of these fun Sherman Oaks teens! I can’t wait for you guys to see @neverhaveiever on July 15th!”

One of the most glaring questions heading into season two is whether tennis legend John McEnroe will return as the series narrator, voicing all of Devi’s inner thoughts and demons. Model Chrissy Teigen was supposed to have a voiceover guest role in the upcoming season, but after her cyberbullying controversy she stepped away from the series. Her role is expected to be recast.
