Netflix thriller series The Hunting Wives may already be preparing for multiple future installments following the success of its debut season. According to Screen Rant, star Dermot Mulroney (Chicago Fire, My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Wedding Date) recently shared updates regarding both season two and a possible third season during an appearance on The Tangle with Kyle Ridley podcast.
Mulroney revealed that production on season two has already wrapped, while early development work on a third season is reportedly underway behind the scenes. The actor stated that writers are currently working on ideas for the next installment, with filming potentially beginning later this year.
Based on the novel by May Cobb (The Hunting Wives, “A Likeable Woman,” “My Summer Darlings”), The Hunting Wives follows Sophie O’Neil, played by Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect, Hairspray, Pitch Perfect 2), as she attempts to start over in an upscale Texas community before becoming entangled with wealthy socialite Margo Banks, played by Malin Akerman (Couples Retreat, 27 Dresses, Watchmen). O’Neil also makes friends with Banks’ inner circle known as the “Hunting Wives,” consisting of Jill, played by Katie Lowes (Scandal, Inventing Anna, This Is Us), Starr, played by Chrissy Metz (This Is Us, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Breakthrough), and Callie, played by Jaime Ray Newman (Catch Me If You Can, Rumor Has It…, The Punisher). Mulroney portrays Margo’s husband, Jed Banks.
During the interview, Mulroney also reflected on the rapid success of the Netflix thriller, explaining that the series unexpectedly grew into a major streaming hit after being acquired by Netflix. He also teased that season two will move beyond the source material from Cobb’s original novel, allowing the story to expand into entirely new territory.
Season two is expected to continue exploring the fractured relationship between Sophie and Margo following the dramatic events of the season one finale. According to the official logline, the pair will once again be forced together as old secrets and dangerous enemies resurface.
New cast members will also be joining season two, including John Stamos (Full House, Fuller House, Grandfathered), Cam Gigandet (Twilight, Never Back Down, The Roommate), and Dale Dickey (Iron Man 3, The Pledge, Winter’s Bone). Stamos will portray Chase Brylan, while Gigandet and Dickey are set to play Gentle John Moffitt and Zelda Moffitt respectively.
The first season of The Hunting Wives became a breakout streaming success for Netflix after climbing into the platform’s Top 10 shortly after release while maintaining a 76% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While Netflix has not officially confirmed a third season, Mulroney’s comments suggest the streaming platform may already be planning a larger future for the thriller series.
