Proceed with caution: the following teaser trailer is short, but certainly not sweet.
Netflix, the entertainment giant behind the heavily-anticipated adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s 13-book masterpiece, A Series of Unfortunate Events, has just dropped its first tantalizing 30-second glimpse at the unfortunate genius of show currently in production.
The clip is just a snippet of Snicket’s morose storybook universe, centering on the misadventures of three orphaned children, the Baudelaires, and their nefarious uncle, Count Olaf. So far, its adaptation to the television screen via Netflix seems promising. The teaser is packed with ominous music (The Dresden Dolls’s “Missed Me”), creepy knick-knacks of all sorts, and a mysterious lack of any of the main characters. It’s more of a preview of the aesthetics of the series rather than a peek at the actual plot or characters – but it’s a start, and a gloomy, amazing one at that.
The series is projected to premiere sometime next year. In true Lemony Snicket fashion, details on the project have remained shrouded in secrecy – little is known regarding current production, other than the fact that the project is spearheaded by Netflix and will be another of its Netflix original series. So far, no clear links have been made between the current television project and the 2004 Jim Carrey film based on the same series.
We’re holding our breath for this one – Netflix’s first foray into family entertainment with A Series of Unfortunate Events may just be its most fortunate venture yet.
EDIT: It has now been confirmed that the trailer, albeit impressively produced, is apparently fan-made and not a product of Netflix.
