Netflix’s ‘Dark’ Returns for Second Season on June 21

Netflix’s German-language original series, Dark, is returning for a second season beginning June 21 on the streamer. The trailer for the twisty thriller reveals that series co-creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese have woven together a labyrinthine plot for season 2. Back in 2017, Netflix dropped the first season of sci-fi drama Dark, which followed four families in a fictional German town, as investigations into child disappearances led to the discovery of strange connections across space and time. The mystery ties back to the same German town in 1986 and is connected to the local nuclear power plant.

After its 2017 release, Dark became one of Netflix’s biggest international hits. Devoted fans have dissected and unpacked the show’s intricate storylines and the complicated mythology that unfolded in the first ten episodes.

According to bo Odar, the second season will “follow Jonas. He is one of the main characters where most of the stuff actually happens. So we will truly stay close to him, but shift some of the storylines to other characters. It’s just like creating this world with all these different children. You like some of them more, some less.”

In the series’ sophomore run, Jonas (Louis Hofmann) will have to unravel the mystery that links the past to the present. Dark will continue to explore the complex relationships of the members of a community that lives under the shadow of a nuclear power plant.

Showrunner Baran bo Odar just revealed that Dark will return for a final season, just three weeks before the second season’s release on Netflix. According to his Instagram post, season 3 will be “the final cycle of this great journey. We always had three season[s] in mind when we developed Dark.” Fans will be eager to see the finale that the creators envisioned all along — but first, they will have to watch the second chapter of the trilogy on June 21.
