Netflix Will Produce Untitled Roald Dahl Animated Series of His Books

Netflix says, “Roald Dahl stories have long inspired award-winning feature films and stage productions. But now, for the first time, Netflix will bring together the highest quality creative, visual, and writing teams to extend the stories in this first-of-its-kind slate of premium animated event series and specials for audiences of all ages and for families to enjoy together. Netflix intends to remain faithful to the quintessential spirit and tone of Dahl while also building out an imaginative story universe that expands far beyond the pages of the books themselves.”

Kids have an imagination so great that they become stories worth telling. Roald Dahl was an author who took stories of his own imagination and turned it into something that we could visually understand and have an appreciation for the childlike manner that is so genuine and beloved. His most famous books are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, and Matilda whose stories took the big screen in successful movie adaptations.

Netflix announced that they will create an animated series for Dahl’s best works. “Immersing ourselves in the extraordinary worlds of Roald Dahl stories has been an honor and a massive amount of fun,” Netflix’s vice president of kids and family content, Melissa Cobb, said in a blog post. “We have great creative ambition to reimagine the journeys of so many treasured Dahl characters in fresh, contemporary ways with the highest quality animation and production values.”

Although Dahl is not with us anymore, his legacy remains. “Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories,” Roald Dahl’s widow, Felicity Dahl, says in a press release. “This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.”

Netflix released a teaser trailer.

Production for the series will begin in 2019.
