Netflix Voids Season Two of ‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ For Anthology Series Focused on Villains’ Origin

Netflix’s superheroes series, Jupiter’s Legacyis coming to an end. According to Deadline, the streaming service has opted to discontinue the show in efforts to create a possibly shared universe of the characters created by Mark Millar (Kick Ass, Old Man Logan). In its place, the platform will develop a live-action series focused on the villains of this universe, the Supercrooks.

“I’m really proud of what the team achieved with Jupiter’s Legacy and the amazing work everyone did on that origin season,” Millar said via Deadline. “I’ve been asked lot about what we’re planning next with this world, and the answer is to see what the supervillains are getting up to. I’ve always loved crime stories, from Scorsese to Tarantino, and supervillains are always the most fun part of any superhero story. To do something exclusively focused on the villains they fight just feels incredibly fresh as we explore what it’s like to be a bad guy in a world crawling with good guys who want to put you in jail,” Millar stated according to Deadline.

According to Deadline, Millar’s Supercrooks sees villains from the Jupiter’s Legacy world band together to form an all-powerful syndicate. The eight-member group’s number one goal is to do whatever they want as they plot a superior heist.

Jupiter’s Legacy is a vast and rich space with lots of characters to mine, and so I’m happy to share that our next step here is a live-action version of the Supercrooks comic I created with Leinil Francis Yu a few years back,” Millar told Deadline. “Given where we’re going next, we’ve made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga. We’re confident we’ll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great,” Millar added via Deadline.

Jupiter’s Legacy was the first project Netflix developed after acquiring the rights to Millar’s comics in 2017, Deadline reports. The series followed a group of heroes dealing with a generational shift as their offspring began to pickup the mantle to save humanity. The show’s main cast included Josh Duhmael (All My Children, Las Vegas), Leslie Bibb (Popular, Iron Man 2) and Ben Daniels (The Exorcist, The Crown). With this creative shift and the cast’s contracts expiring, Netflix opted not to renew their commitments to the show.

“We’re confident we’ll return to it later,” Millar reportedly said about Jupiter’s Legacy according to Deadline. The characters could appear in the Supercrooks series, or in another iteration of the storied universe altogether. In addition to the Supercrooks live-action series, Netflix is planning an anime version of the villains’ tale later this year. The streaming service’s relationship with Millar will also see content based on other Millarworld properties, including The Magic Order.
