Netflix To Increase The Subscription Price

The streaming service announced another increase in price today.

The standard monthly package, which allows two people to stream at the same time, will now be $9.99 instead of $8.99. The one dollar increase will be in effect for new subscribers. The cheaper plan for one single viewer is still available for $7.99.

“To continue adding more TV shows and movies including many Netflix original titles, we are modestly raising the price for some new members in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement about the increase. “As a thank you to existing Netflix members—who aren’t already benefiting from a previous price guarantee—we will maintain their current price for a year.”

So current Netflix members will have a grace period before their prices are increased. Wired reports that this is not the first Netflix price increase recently. Last year they increased the standard plan to $8.99 while creating the single user plan at the same time.

The grace period along with the modest price increase doesn’t mean a whole lot for the average Netflix user. The benefit of the change is the hope for new content available on Netflix.
