Netflix Renews ’13 Reasons Why’ for Season 3

Netflix is renewing 13 Reasons Why, giving it another thirteen episode season. The renewal comes after just under three weeks after the release of the second season, the production for the third season will commence later this year. The third season of the young adult drama will return in 2019. The streamer confirmed the news by releasing a short teaser announcement.

Here’s the video:

Brian Yorkey (creator of the series) will return as the series’ showrunner, as well as, his fellow executive producers: Joy Gorman, Mandy Teefey, Kristel Laiblin, Tom McCarthy, Selena Gomez, and Steve Golin. The core cast, including Dylan Minnette (Clay), Miles Heizer (Alex), Alisha Boe (Jessica), and other cast members will be returning for a third season. However, Katherine Langford (Hannah) confirmed her departure from the series after the first two seasons.

There have been some concerns about whether or not Netflix should make a third season because of the show’s subject matter. The series focuses on: teen suicide, bullying, drunk driving, and rape in graphic detail. Some mental health experts have criticized the show believing that it poses health risks for some young people, especially the ones with suicidal thoughts. However, 13 Reasons Why does have high ratings, a strong social media performance, and it is also a cultural zeitgeist.

Yorkey did give audiences some clues on his plan for season three. He said, “What happened to Hannah will always be the first clause of the story. The rest of the story is about young people, as so many young people, maybe all young people today (learn) how to heal from the things that have hurt them…to make the world that they want it to be, not just the world they are inheriting, and above all, how to take care of each other.”

With Langford’s depature she said, “I think 13 Reasons Why will always be an important part of my life. It was the first job I ever had.” She also said that she plans to maintain her connection with the fans, “even if it’s in a small capacity, on social media.”
