Netflix Releases Trailer for ‘The Crown’ Season 2

Netflix has released the official trailer for the upcoming second season of its British royal drama The Crown. “The acclaimed series,” as the trailer put it, is based on the award-winning play The Audience, and follows the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. Netflix revealed the trailer on Monday, and the season is set to begin with the British Armed Forces fighting an illegal war in Egypt and ends with the retirement of the Queen’s third prime minister, Harold Macmillan, after a devastating scandal.

The second season of The Crown will explore the end of the age of deference and the start of the 1960s revolutions. The trailer features the constant tension between the Queen and Prince Philip.

The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that the second season will show more of Prince Philip’s past when actor Matt Smith gave them insight at the first-season premiere event last year.

Smith told THR, “We learn a lot more about Prince Philip. A lot about his past. He has a very interesting past, Philip. Quite a mad past. And we go into that in a lot of detail.”

The Crown‘s first season proved to be very successful after its premiere in 2016 when it went on to win two Golden Globes and two Screen Actors Guild awards as well as three Emmys.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith are set to return in the second season as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey) will be added to the cast in this upcoming season as Princess Margaret’s (played by Vanessa Kirby) husband Antony Armstrong-Jones. Along with the addition of Goode, Michael C. Hall (Dexter) joins the cast in the second season as John F. Kennedy.

Season 2 of The Crown will consist of ten episodes and is set to debut Dec. 8 on Netflix.
