Over the weekend, the official Netflix website released video that announced Vikings: Valhalla’s third season has already started production. Netflix announced the show’s two-season renewal after the first season’s popularity. The video ends with the reveal that the third season of Vikings: Valhalla is coming in 2024.
The video via the official Netflix website confirms that Leif Erikson, played by Sam Corlett (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Dry), and Harald Sigurdsson, played by Leo Suter (Victoria, Beecham House), will embark on a new journey together. At the end of season two, the friends finally arrived at Constantinople after a tragic voyage that saw the death of six of their crewmembers and the deceit of Harald’s new lover.
The video included a few teaser scenes that indicate that this new season will pick up around five or six years after the end of season two. In the scenes, we can see the main three characters of the show and what they have been doing during that time. We see Freydis Eriksdotter, played by Frida Gustavsson (Dröm, Partisan), in a Viking longboat with a redheaded child, probably her and Harald’s son.
Another conflict explored by the show that is going to continue into season three is the Christianisation of the Viking kingdoms and how this creates conflict with people like Freydis who are believers of the old faith. It also seems that the leadership of these Viking kingdoms will come into question, especially Svein’s, played by newcomer Charlie O’Connor, claim to the throne of Norway.
The show was created by Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Liberator) and serves as a sequel to the original Vikings show created by Michael Hirst (Billy the Kid, The Tudors). Valhalla earned a two-season renewal after the first season’s release in February 2022.
The cast of the show includes Bradley Freegard (Gwaith/Cartref, Keeping Faith) playing King Canute; Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Game of Thrones, Stella Blómkvist) playing Olaf Haraldsson; Laura Berlin (Notruf Hafenkante, Einstein) plays Emma of Normandy; David Oakes (Victoria, The Borgias) as the Earl of Godwin; Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead, Darlin’) plays Queen Ælfgifu; Soren Pilmark (The Kingdom, Atlantic Crossing) as Sweyn Forkbeard; Taylor James (Samson, Justice League) stars as Batu; Kayode Akinyemi (The House Invictus, Max Justice) plays Kaysan; Sofya Lebedeva (1703, Posledniy Ministr) plays Elena; Stanislav Callas (Totems, Atlantic Crossing) as Jorundr; and Yngvild Støen Grotmol (TRIO: Cybergullet, Eyewitness) as Gudrid.
