‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Season 2 Episode 4 “Those Who Walk Away”

Amazon Prime Video’s original series The Legend of Vox Machina season two episode four entitled “Those Who Walk Away” kicks off with the team mourning the loss of Laura Bailey’s Vex’ahlia due to her being killed by a beam of energy. The interesting thing about this is how Liam O’Brien’s Vax’ildan ends up seeing the Matron of Ravens as she takes Vex’s soul. Ultimately, the viewer sees that Vax makes a deal in exchanging his soul for hers. In his mind, he could not bear to live in a world where his sister is not alive. This comes from his fear of being alone without Vex. The viewer can argue that with the Matron of Ravens taking the deal it would lead to the same result one dies and the other must live with it.

Additionally, the team is betrayed by the two members of The Slayer’s Take as they believe that the team is not worthy of the Matron of Raven’s Armor. In their minds, dispute their criminal like behavior they care about their boss’s opinion. Which is why they feel it is their responsibility to take the armor from the team as it involved a quest given to them by The Slayer Take’s boss. This demonstrates that deep down they have some sense of honor even if they go about, it in the wrong way. This is further supported by how when one of the members tries to help clean up the mess, they both made the other one jumps in to help him so he would not get hurt. This shows the viewer that both groups, be it the team or The Slayer’s Take, share similar morals when it comes to others as well as each other.

At the end of the episode, the viewer receives an implication that the armor could be cursed. This is a result of how Vax gets transported to another mental plain of existence where there is someone else wearing the same armor. In the end he beats the person only to see that The Matron has a magical string attached to him. In his mind, Vax sees the actual price for his sister’s soul being spared. He now knows that even though the Matron does not speak the string makes her intentions clear. Vax now belongs to her which means there is no heaven or hell for him when he dies only servitude. The interesting part about this is how in the moment he would have paid any price to save his sister. However, down the line he may come to resent her as he sees his attachment to her as the reason, he no longer has freedom. This could give the viewer the implication that he could turn evil towards the end of the season.
